St Andrews Aquarium Opens New Exhibits For The Summer Holidays

Following major renovation works, the aquarium has unveiled a new home for a family of otters, a hands-on Dino Dig fossil excavation and a new outdoor decked area for visitors.

St Andrews Aquarium has opened a series of new exhibits in time for the school summer holidays, following a significant programme of renovation works. The additions include a new outdoor home for a family of otters, a hands-on dinosaur dig and a new decked area for families to relax and explore.

The works began after Storm Bibet damaged part of the site in Winter 2023. Rather than simply restore what was lost, the aquarium used the opportunity to redevelop the space and add several new attractions for visitors.

Otter Kingdom is a new outdoor habitat set against the St Andrews coastline, featuring naturalistic pools, water features and climbing terraces, giving the public the opportunity to get up close and personal with these fascinating creatures while they swim and play.

Dino Dig is a hands-on excavation area where children can dig in the sand to uncover real dinosaurs fossils for themselves. Designed as an educational space, it is filled with fun facts about prehistoric life and offers younger visitors a chance to learn through play.

The renovations have also created a new outdoor decked area, giving families a comfortable space to relax and take in their surroundings while children explore the aquarium’s varied and educational exhibits.

Owner John Mace said: “The storms were a real setback, but they gave us the chance to rethink the space and add something new for our visitors. We’re delighted with the result, and looking forward to continue adding more and exciting exhibits to the space over the coming years.”

He added: “Otter Kingdom has been a lovely addition, and seeing the otters up close in their new home is something visitors really enjoy. With Dino Dig and the new outdoor space, there’s plenty for families to see and do this summer, whether they’re returning or visiting for the first time.”

The new exhibits are open throughout the school summer holidays, with keeper talks and feeding sessions planned across the season.

All are included with standard aquarium admission.
